Lobbyist drafts bill to ban gays from NFL | TheHill

Lobbyist drafts bill to ban gays from NFL

Washington lobbyist Jack Burkman on Monday said he is preparing legislation that would ban gay athletes from joining the National Football League.
Burkman in a statement said he has garnered political support for the bill, though his statement didn’t mention any specific lawmakers who are behind it.

”We are losing our decency as a nation,” Burkman said in a statement. "Imagine your son being forced to shower with a gay man. That’s a horrifying prospect for every mom in the country. What in the world has this nation come to?”
Burkman said he came up with the idea after college football star Michael Sam publicly revealed he is gay a few weeks ago. If drafted, Sam would be the first openly gay player in the NFL.
Jason Collins on Sunday became the first openly gay athlete to play for a major men's professional sports team when he suited up for the NBA's Brooklyn Nets against the Los Angeles Lakers.
A number of Democratic lawmakers voiced their support of Sam after he revealed his sexual orientation in an interview with ESPN, and first lady Michelle Obama hailed him as an "inspiration."
Burkman was not available to speak with The Hill but urged Congress to act in his statement.
“If the NFL has no morals and no values, then Congress must find values for it,” Burkman said.
Burkman serves as founder and president of his own lobbying firm, Burkman Associates. He has also worked as of counsel at law firm Holland & Knight. In the 1990s, he served as counsel to then-Rep. Rick Lazio (R-N.Y.).
Burkman's firm, JM Burkman & Associates, signed 70 new clients last year, the most of any K Street firm, a recent review by The Hill found.

The four-lobbyist firm specializes in helping companies secure contracts with the federal government.

Percentage of gay men in America

HOW MANY AMERICAN MEN ARE GAY?

Jennifer Still

Roughly 5%.

For all the homophobia that exists in the world, all the Bible-thumpers who claim that being gay is unnatural and against God’s will and all that, there sure are a lot of homosexuals in the world, both male and female. But just how many might shock you. Hint: it’s a lot more than you probably think.
The New York Times estimates that roughly 5% of American men are gay, while historical data puts the range between 2 and 10%. It’s a hard number to pin down considering the number of men who aren’t out and the inability to survey every single one living in the country. As reporter Seth Stephens-Davidowitz put it:
At least 5 percent of American men, I estimate, are predominantly attracted to men, and millions of gay men still live, to some degree, in the closet. Gay men are half as likely as straight men to acknowledge their sexuality on social networks. More than one quarter of gay men hide their sexuality from anonymous surveys. The evidence also suggests that a large number of gay men are married to women.
While things like Gallup polls, Facebook and the state census can help shed light on these numbers, it really is impossible to tell just how much of the population is gay. And, of course, this article only focused on homosexual men. When putting gay women, bisexuals and other queer cultures in the mix, that percentile of “alternative sexualities” goes way up – to at least nine million, according to a 2011 study by The Williams Institute.
Of course, there’s no real reason to even need this data other than to satisfy some innate curiosity or, perhaps, to prove to Conservatives how homosexuality and bisexuality are not only not sinful, they’re also not down to a few select deviants but are instead a large and thriving part of the population.

Anderson Cooper asks Senator Melvin if religion freedom is protected by discriminating against gays,  than why not discriminate against divorced people or un-wed mothers?  Both are a not allowed in the Bible so why are they not discriminated against?

The point is, how does being gay threaten your right to worship your god or stop you from being a christian?

The senator says the bill is a preemptive measure.  By being preemptive you are admitting religious rights have not been violated at all.  The laws in Arizona already allow people to discriminate against LGBT people since they have limited rights to begin with in that state.

Anderson Cooper Tears into AZ Pol over ‘Anti-Gay’ Law: ‘You’re Seriously Blaming the Media?!’

VIDEO515
Anderson Cooper took on Arizona state senator Al Melvin Monday night over the state’s proposed legislation to allow businesses to exercise their religious freedom to discriminate against LGBT citizens. Melvin insisted, “It’s nothing more and nothing less than protecting religious freedom in our state.” Cooper noted how Arizona doesn’t expressly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation, and grilled Melvin on why, then, they would need to reaffirm a right that isn’t under threat in the state in the first place.
Cooper asked, “Can you give me a specific example of someone in Arizona who’s been forced to do something against their religious belief or successfully sued because of their faith?”
Melvin said he could not, arguing the bill is “preemptive.” Cooper asked him if, hypothetically, a Catholic loan officer could refuse to give a loan to a divorced woman. Melvin told Cooper he was being “far-fetched,” insisting, “I don’t know of anybody in Arizona who would discriminate against a fellow human being.”
When Cooper pointed out that Arizona businesses (including the state Chamber of Commerce) oppose the bill, Melvin said it’s “because there has become a media frenzy on this.” Cooper incredulously asked, “You’re seriously blaming the media on this?! Oh, come on.”
Cooper then pressed Melvin on whether he believes firing someone for being gay or lesbian is discrimination. Melvin did not give a direct answer, telling Cooper, “I know you’re trying to set me up, and I’m not going to stand for it, sir.”

Opponents of SB 1062, an Arizona bill that would broaden rights of business owners to refuse service to gays based on religious beliefs, demonstrate at the state Capitol in Phoenix, urging Gov. Jan Brewer to veto the measure. (CHERYL EVANS / Arizona Republic / Associated Press / February 24, 2014)
TUCSON, Ariz. -- Three Republicans who supported a bill bolstering the rights of business owners to refuse service to gays and others on the basis of religion reversed course Monday and asked the governor to veto the controversial measure.
Republican state Sens. Adam Driggs, Steve Pierce and Bob Worsley delivered a letter to Gov. Jan Brewer  pleading for her to reject SB 1062. The measure is intended to bolster a business owner’s right to refuse service to gays and others if the owner believes doing so violates the practice and observance of his or her religion.
“While our sincere intent in voting for this bill was to create a shield for all citizens’ religious liberties, the bill has instead been mischaracterized by its opponents as a sword for religious intolerance. These allegations are causing our state immeasurable harm,” they wrote. “As Arizona leaders, we feel it is important to loudly proclaim that we strongly condemn discrimination in any form.”
Some foes of the legislation have threatened to boycott Arizona if the bill becomes law.
The three state lawmakers joined Arizona’s two U.S. senators, Republicans  John McCain and Jeff Flake, in asking Brewer for a veto.
The governor has until Friday to sign or veto the bill, which the Legislature passed last week. She has said she hasn’t decided what she will do.
Gay rights activists, business groups, a coalition of faith-based leaders and politicians from various political persuasions also have blasted the bill.
Several online petitions against the bill are drawing support, including at least a dozen on Change.org.  The most popular, created by Jaqueline Todd of Phoenix, has more than 60,000 signatures, according to a spokesman for Change.org.
Proponents of SB 1062 say the bill is being misrepresented as discriminatory when it  is merely  intended to protect religious freedom.
“The religious beliefs of all Arizonans must be respected, and this bill does nothing more than affirm that,” said Republican state Sen. Steve Yarbrough, who introduced the measure.
Technically, the bill expands the definition of the free exercise of religion, allowing a faithful person to adhere to his or her beliefs in practice. It also expands the definition of “person” to include any business, association and corporation, among others.
Arizona’s bill is similar to proposals in other states, including ones that failed in Kansas and Idaho. Another is under consideration in Utah.
The legislation comes as support for same-sex marriage is gaining momentum in the courts, and on the heels of two cases in which state courts sided with gay couples in wedding-related lawsuits.
In New Mexico, the state Supreme Court allowed a gay couple to sue a photographer who refused to photograph their commitment ceremony. And in Colorado, a state judge ruled against a baker who had refused to sell a wedding cake to a gay couple.

Who cares about Global Warming....only people who care.

"The chaotic nature of weather means that no conclusion about climate can ever be drawn from a single data point, hot or cold. The temperature of one place at one time is just weather, and says nothing about climate, much less climate change, much less global climate change." http://grist.org/series/skeptics/

I think some of the controversy revolves around the words "Global Warming" which should be referred to as "Climate Change" They both mean the same thing but the first is more scary.

Either side of the debate takes the data and spins it to their benefit. So all the stats from Tim are true. However, they are also true to the opposing opinion. If you look at http://climatechange.procon.org which talks about Human Causation, you will see the pros and the cons for climate change are the same. You can spin the data either way to fit your own opinion.

What it comes down to is (like everything) your politics. For some reason if you are liberal then you are pro climate change. If you are conservative than you are against it. Why?

Why is it that I drive a Prius so I get the stink eye from conservatives? They tell me I drive it because I’m a tree-hugging liberal who is feeding into the global warming scare. No you idiot. I drive a Prius because it gets 50mpg and I don’t want to spend $75 to fill my tank when I can spend $30. It’s not climate, it’s common sense. Why would you drive a gas guzzling Ford F150 that gets 12 mpg if you live in a gated community in a state with no snow? To me that makes no sense. By all means you have a right to do that, especially if that vehicle is your livelihood, but don’t you dare bitch and complain about high gas prices. You lost that right when you decide to drive a vehicle that you really don’t need to haul your kid’s soccer ball to the school soccer field 4 miles away from home.

Why do politics determine what I think about climate change? Why is it if a democrat says something is true than a conservative MUST say the opposite or vice versa just because of the D or the R behind the name of the person saying it? Make your own decisions. Stop waiting to see what your favorite talking head tells you to believe. I’m hard on FOX NEWS I know this. Only because I can watch NBC, CBS, ABC or BBC and I get all kinds of opinions on weather. When I watch FOX I get ONE. ONE opinion, ONE view. I can’t live that way.

Do I know for sure if humans cause climate change? Nope. And I don’t give a shit.

Do I think humans may be contributing to climate change? Common sense tells me to look at L.A. on a dry summer day, at Beijing on any given day, Seattle, NY, Chicago….look at any major city in any country and you can literally see the pollution hovering in the air. In L.A. the weather forecast is accompanied by a Smog Alert advising whether or not people with asthma should even go outside. That means the air is POISON to some people. If there is POISON floating in the air, wouldn’t common sense tell you that this may affect your weather???? That shit just doesn’t disappear.

Have we had extremely hot decades or centuries and ice ages? Yes. Will we have them again? Yes. This is the way the Earth is. It will never stop evolving. Do I think we are not doing it any favors by pouring shit into the air? YES.

We are not the reason for climate change but we aren’t helping it either. It’s happening. Hurricanes are stronger and more frequent. Winters are colder. Summers are hotter. This is the way it is in OUR life time. 100 years from now it will be different. That is still no reason to fill the air with crap that doesn’t need to be there.

For all the Christians out there, I don’t think your God really appreciates you destroying a planet he created for you to live on….just saying.

Are you there God? It's Me. A Seahawks Fan.

Click on the link to read and hear the story from MYNW.com
Are you there God? It's Me. A Seahawks Fan.: Half of Americans surveyed say they think God is partially responsible for a sports win or loss, and many think their team has been cursed by something supernatural. But Bothell's Eastlake Community Church's pastor says no, sports have to do with athleticism, not God. He says there are more important things to pray for.

I always laugh when I see and hear people praying at high school sporting events, any sporting event as far as that goes.  Coaches and players gathered around in a circle praying to God that they will be the ones who win.  I always wonder what if two catholic schools are playing each other?  Clearly both teams are going to pray for a win.  Does god have a favorite catholic school?  Does the one with the least amount of child molestations get a tip o' the hat from god?

Yes, yes one can say "no, no we aren't praying for a win.  we are praying that god will guide us to make the right decisions and allow him to use the players to glorify god."  No.  Sorry.  You're praying for a win. You can justify it all you want but you sure as hell want a win.

Russel Wilson of the Seahawks if very open about his faith.  Tim Tebow is also a vocal proponent for christianity.  I have no problem with that.  Russel Wilson is very successful and probably the best quarterback in football history.  Yes he used his faith to get to where he is today.  However, non-christians can have the same success and they use the same strategies to get there.  They just don't label it as "faith."

Christians:
When you pray you are putting your thoughts, your dreams, your struggles out to God to hear.  God, in turn,  guides you and shows you how to accomplish your goals and work through your problems.  Your faith in him allows you to recognize bad decisions, bad influences also well thought out decisions and positive influences.  You become a better person.

Athiests:
The flip side is if you are a non-christian, an atheist, you are putting your thoughts, your dreams, your struggles out to the "universe."  By verbalizing or writing down your thoughts and issues, you are making them tangible.  You now know that you have these goals to accomplish and you need to start making the correct choices to make that happen.  You recognize bad decisions that would deviate from accomplishing those goals.  You begin to recognize the kind of company you keep.  A bad person, a negative influence, will become clear to you and you will then see that you need to get that person out of your life.  On the other hand you will see what kind of positive influences that other people have to offer and knowing them will help you obtain those goals in a healthy, safe manner. You become a better person.

All this is the same as prayer.  The only difference is that Athiests are not doing it to glorify God.  We are doing it to better ourselves and the world around us....which is really what Christians are accomplishing when they pray and glorify God.

So when you pray at a sporting event remember that not only is it selfish, it is not glorifying God.  It just shows that you really, really, really want to win.

Superman & Wonder Woman Vintage Phones..I WANT ONE

Click on the link to visit the Superman Homepage.  http://supermanhomepage.com/news.php?readmore=14533

Some of the most sought after collectibles out there among Superman and Wonder Woman fans are the old vintage Figural Telephones. Seeing how they were only produced over a couple of years, finding one for your collection is not easy. So here is what I believe to be the true history of the phones from all my years of research into them.
In 1978, the first Superman and Wonder Woman telephones were made by MicroCommunications in CA. Model #42-85 was the Wonder Woman version, and Model #41-85 was a Superman version. They made a brown wood grain base version of both characters as well as a red plastic base, and a yellow plastic base with Wonder Woman. Both in rotary and touch tone. I believe they just came in plain cardboard boxes with foam inserts as the company did not have the license. Very few of these phones were actually released and made it to the public. They did not have the license to sell them, so DC Comics shut them down for copyright infringement. After they were shut down, instead of being destroyed as ordered, the Production Manager took the original molds, the statues, and unused phone bases home with him. Eventually he sold them all (with the exception of the original molds) to a private collector in Florida in 1979-1980, and he eventually sold them all to other dealers and collectors. There were approx. 50 Superman statues and 20-25 Wonder Woman statues. The loose statues did not have any holes in the bottom of the feet. Some sellers out there claim to have 'prototypes' because there is no holes drilled, but any of the left over statues did not have the holes in them as they were never used. If you have one with a hole under the feet, it would have been at one time used on a phone. Plus any of the statues out there all originated from the same guy who bought them all back in 79-80. He never attached any of the statues to the bases or tried to sell them as phones as some rumors have stated. He never sold any of the left over bases either. He believes he ended up throwing them away when he moved. It has always been believed that the original molds were then sold to Allied to produce the phones.
Superman PhoneIn 1979, Allied Telecommunication Equipment Co. (ATE) located in NY, made the Superman and Wonder Woman telephones which were fully licensed by DC Comics. They were supposed to also make a Batman version, but as far as I know it was never done. They made both phones in two versions: Rotary and Touch Tone. They had white/cream bases with red undersides. The Superman phones came in white boxes with a sticker photo of the phone on one side. Same sticker on both versions and they would check off which one was inside. There was an option for a 'Bronze' version but as far as I know it was never produced. On the back of the white bases of the Superman phones, it is stamped in the plastic, "TM & DC Comics, 1979". Also on the bottom side of the phones, there is an ATE sticker with all the FCC license info, etc. if you look you will notice it actually states 'Superman' on it as well. On the Wonder Woman versions, the stickers have been "cut down" to only show the FCC info and numbers. They have been cut right below the word 'Superman', so I believe they never actually made a 'Wonder Woman' sticker to apply and just cut down and reused the Superman ones. Note: There were also several of these phones at the 1980 Consumer Electronics Show (C.E.S) that had a special sticker added to them that read "No. 149 C.E.S. (Consumer Electronics Show) Show 1980 Premiere Edition" or "No 162, CES Show 1980, Premiere Edition, President A.T.E." I have seen several different numbers on them, not sure how many of the numbered 'Premier Editions' were actually sold this way.
In 1981, Character Phones Inc., took over the licensed Superman and Wonder Woman phones. 'Character Phones' was the same company as 'ATE' just under a different name. Their sales advertisement clearly shows the white base ATE phones in the photos, and if you look at the stickers attached to bottom of phones, it has ATE on them as well. They produced the red base phones in both touch tone and rotary for both characters. They came in a plain white box which was factory stamped on the top with the four phone options and they could check off which phone was enclosed. The rotary phones sold for $129.00 and the touch tone sold for $149.00.
Superman PhoneNo one will ever know for sure just how many of each phone was ever produced and sold, and even then a lot of phones were broken and destroyed over the years. The figures would break off at the feet, the backs where the phone hung up would crack and fall apart, the Superman capes were all lost, etc.
I have tracked down and talked to as many of the former employees I could locate, the collectors who bought out the phones and statues, collectors who have the phones, guys who had photos, flyers, etc. and Google'd until my fingers bled to find all this information, and unless something else eventually pops up on the phones, this is the best history I have been able to piece together so far.
So enjoy the photo album here and on Facebook as it should help you understand everything I have written above. There has been all kinds of 'rumors' on these phones the last 30 years, but I think the the pics below will back up my version of the story.
If anyone else out there has anymore info, pics, paperwork, etc. please contact me.
Superman PhoneAnd thanks to everyone who has helped me with photos of their phones, or other info to put all the pieces together.
Kyall, Kim, Kristin, Renny, Susan, Art & Allie, John, Cameron ...you guys were WONDERful!
Charles... my buddy and one of the 'Original' Superman Collectors who was collecting Superman before collecting was cool, who took the time 35 years ago to collect all the loose statues and phones and photos from Micro and get them back in the hands of collectors instead of thrown away or destroyed... SUPER job!
And to the old former ATE employee who contacted me out of the blue several years ago as he wanted me to have the file copies, prototypes, boxes, etc he has stored away for the last 30 years since the company shut down for my collection he read about online. I was the right guy in the right spot and the right time I guess. That is really what got me going to figure the history out.
